5th Framework Programme European Commission

Objectives and Contents

The network aims at the improvement of nanostructured organic materials for optoelectronic applications, such as photonic antennae, LEDs, lasers, sensors and NLO devices. The difficulties met with conventional polymer-based organic materials are overcome by the design of highly ordered and well defined materials with full control of intermolecular interactions, making use of the unique properties of oligomeric conjugated molecules encapsulated in organic or inorganic hosts. The resulting host-guest compounds (HGCs) are optimised with respect to NLO efficiencies, luminescence properties, as well as rates of electron and energy transfer. Spectroscopic investigations and theoretical calculations will lead to a detailed understanding of the structure-property relationships of HGCs. The technological potential of the materials for device fabrication is explored.

Objectives: preparation of highly ordered photonic materials with full control of intermolecular interactions

Materials:

  • inclusion compounds of organic dyes (nPV, nT,...) in organic (PHTP) and inorganic (zeolites) hosts
materials

Advantages:

  • low dimensionality
  • prevention of aggregation
  • enhanced chemical stability
  • control of energy transfer
  • nanostructuring

Applications:

  • lasing microcavities
  • energy funneling
  • NLO devices
  • organic light emitting diodes
